Learning Specialist
The HCES LEARNING SPECIALISTS will focus on grades 1-8 and will work with students in small groups to assess and support those with learning challenges, providing individualized instruction, developing learning strategies, and collaborate with teachers and parents to ensure students reach their academic potential. This will be accomplished by focusing on students with learning disabilities or specific needs within a classroom setting by conducting diagnostic assessments, creating personalized learning plans, teaching study skills, and communicating student progress to relevant parties and developing intervention strategies for the student(s). HCES faculty will follow and promote the school’s mission, vision and philosophy.
QUALIFICATIONS
A minimum of a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university but candidates with a master’s degree in Ed. Leadership or equivalent certification will be given preference. Florida teaching certificate required endorsements for subject and level assigned or related certification. Must have a degree in education or related appropriate field and have completed any additional coursework as required by FCIS and DOE if teaching out of field. Desired applicants will have at least five years of teaching experience.
JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Direct remedial academic support for individual students or small-groups (3-4) to reinforce classroom concepts or assist with study skills (not homework completion).
2. Conduct comprehensive evaluations to identify learning strengths and weaknesses, including academic skills, cognitive abilities and executive functioning.
3. Develop tailored learning plans based on assessment results, incorporating specific strategies and accommodations to address individual needs.
4. Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions to reinforce concepts, teach study skills, and address specific learning gaps.
5. Consulting with classroom teachers to discuss student progress, share strategies for differentiation, and coordinate support within the general education setting.
6. Regularly communicate with parents about student progress, explaining assessment results, and providing guidance on supporting their child's learning at home.
7. Implement evidence-based interventions to address specific learning challenges, such as phonemic awareness activities, visual aids, or organizational techniques.
8. Track student progress through ongoing assessments and data collection to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and adjust strategies as needed.
9. Stay updated on current research and best practices related to learning disabilities and effective instructional strategies.
10. May also facilitate targeted learning groups for students with similar needs, train teachers on inclusive practices and strategies to support diverse learners, observe classroom instruction to identify areas for improvement and provide feedback to teachers, and collaborate with school administration, teachers and parents to ensure appropriate accommodations and support services are provided.
11. Plan and oversee purposeful assignments of teacher assistant(s) and volunteer(s).
12. Use technology in the teaching/learning process.
13. Assume responsibility for extracurricular or co-curricular activities as assigned or approved by the school.
14. Manage student behavior and administer discipline according to school policies.
15. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
16. Assist in selection of instructional materials.
17. Prepare substitute lesson and emergency plans.
