Last Wednesday, the Parent Association and our HCES families treated the faculty and staff to the Annual Cookie Exchange. This yearly event is truly a favorite among the staff as they enjoy a coffee bar and listen to Christmas tunes as they fill their boxes with dozens of sweet treats. A special thank you to this year's chair, Sara Patterson and PA President Heather Brown for their hard work organizing and setting up the much-anticipated event. And a huge thank you to all the families that baked and brought in treats.

Lower school students will present their Christmas programs to their families on Friday, December 21st. Students should wear holiday clothes for their performance. The program schedule is as follows:
The students, faculty and staff of Holy Comforter Episcopal School opened their hearts this holiday season. The school sponsored 34 children through the GuardianAdLitem program in which to provide a Christmas full of gifts. Each class sponsored a child and students, with their families, brought in gender specific clothes, toys and other necessities. The GuardianAdLitem children ranged in age from a few months old to teenage years.
This has become the annual Christmas outreach program for Holy Comforter, as the school has been associated with GuardianAdLitem through Child Advocate II since 2002.
On Thursday, December 6th, teachers and students gathered the gifts from each classroom and set them out front under the Bell Tower for pick-up. The site was a mound of bags, bikes, games and more, full of goodies for local children. Members of the Holy Comforter student council helped load the toys into the back of the moving truck. Despite the chilly morning, our hearts were full. GuardianAdLitem will host an event for the foster families to come pick-up the gifts before Christmas.
Progress is being made on the infrastructure phase of the building, despite these cold morning temperatures. Click here to watch the construction cam to witness their work in action, especially fun for our younger students.

This past week, we have kicked off the Christmas season with several events here at HCES. Today, we held the annual Blessing of the Christmas Tree. After a special Courtyard Chapel, Mother Beth blessed this year's tree and students from each Lower School class and Middle School TARGET group took turns hanging prayer chains they had made on the tree.
On Thursday, November 29th, the Middle School Band, Chorus and Guitar ensembles held the annual Christmas concert for families and friends. They played and sang Christmas favorites for all to enjoy.
Many classrooms are decked out for Christmas with trees, elves and more, but in the midst of the fun, we are remembering the true meaning of this season. Mother Beth has distributed Advent calendars to the students and teachers and they are spending time reflecting on this season. This Friday, Middle School students will don their best holiday apparel and next week, we will celebrate with the annual 1st Grade Nativity - a Holy Comforter tradition for over 30 years! And during the last week of school, we look forward to seeing everyone for our annual Lower School Christmas Program, celebrations and Middle School sled races!
We are grateful we get to celebrate the magic and true meaning of the season you and your children! Merry Christmas!

HCES students brightened their "grandpeople's" day with a morning of musical cheer on Tuesday, November 20th at the annual Grandpeople's Day program. Over 400 grandpeople joined their grandchildren for a morning of performances and time in the classroom.
After a lively music program full of songs, grandpeople were invited back to the classroom to visit and enjoy refreshments. Three separate sessions for different grade levels invited them for time with their students. Grandparents in the 1st and 2nd sessions listened to the wonderful music performed by grades PK-1st and 2nd - 5th grade students. Middle school students invited their grandpeople to a traditional chapel program with performances from guitar students and the Middle School Choir.
Grandpeople's Day, a long-standing Holy Comforter tradition, is held each year on the Tuesday before the Thanksgiving holidays. A grandperson may be a grandparent, aunt, uncle, friend or any special person. A very special thank you to Grandpeople's Chair, Katherine Boland and her team of volunteers for coordinating another incredible day for our special visitors.
On Tuesday, October 16th, HCES Band and Guitar students participated in a music workshop at Lincoln High School featuring Trans-Siberian Orchestra founding violinist Mark Wood. Topics included musicianship, incorporating new styles/genres in school music settings, instrument design, arranging, and musical entrepreneurship. Mr. Wood interacted extensively with Holy Comforter students over the course of the presentation, taking great interest in their musical activities. The kids truly enjoyed hearing, and seeing, this world-class performer in such an up-close setting. A special thank you to Lincoln High School Orchestra Director Dr. Clara Knotts for including our students!
Fun Fact: Mark Wood has played with Celine Dion, Billy Joel, Steve Vai andLenny Kravitz.

As we move into the month of November and begin looking toward celebrating Thanksgiving, we thank God for all the good things that He has given us. We are so blessed and want to bless others during this season through a canned food drive. Donated items will help fill the shelves of the Holy Comforter Food Pantry. Students will be collecting canned goods from November 1st through November 16th. Items Needed: Canned Fruits, Soups, Rice, Canned Vegetables, Peanut Butter, Pasta, Canned Meats (tuna, ham, etc.) and Cereal. Thank you for your generous response!
We wanted to send out an update on Hurricane Michael outreach to let you know how appreciative we are for our school, for the outpouring of supplies from our families and everyone's willingness to support our Panhandle neighbors during this ongoing recovery from Hurricane Michael. The drive we did during Fall Festival was very successful - we were able to complete 170 hygiene kits that included a hand towel, a washcloth, a bar of soap, fingernail clippers, bandages, a comb and a toothbrush. These kits have already been assembled by our Lower School classes and were delivered to those who needed them. The supplies that were leftover (especially extra bars of soap and toothbrushes) were given to a HCES family who have been instrumental in relief operations in Calhoun County. Also on Fall Festival night, many wagons of non-perishable items were sent directly to the church's food pantry to replenish what was given out in the immediate days after the hurricane. We also collected $215 in cash that was sent to Episcopal Relief and Development. Many thanks to you if you donated online as well.
Holy Comforter also has two fellow FCIS schools that have been heavily damaged by the storm -- Robert F. Munroe Day School in Quincy and Holy Nativity Episcopal School in Panama City. As we reached out to offer our support, both schools provided long lists of necessary supplies and equipment that they need to replace immediately to continue their mission. Once we received these lists, it was apparent to us that they needed more than what we felt we could assemble through a "school supply" drive. Therefore, we decided to support these friends in another way. In addition to offering furniture, including desks, chairs, stools and more that we have in storage, we were able to give both schools $5,000 each in Scholastic dollars we raised during book fairs where they can go shopping and purchase what they needed directly from the Scholastic catalog. In the case of Holy Nativity, their library is a total loss. Here is what they posted Tuesday night on Facebook.
How can you thank a sister school who rushes to your assistance during your most challenging days? Thank you to our friends at Holy Comforter Episcopal School, Tallahassee for their generous donation of Scholastic Books, funds from their Book fair, and library chairs! And they are praying for our recovery! God bless ️ Holy Comforter Episcopal School
Their Head of School, who was here in February as a member of our re-accreditation team, also commented:
Judy Elms Hughes Let’s remember, they, too, suffered from Michael’s destruction. How remarkably kind.
Our part in their recovery will be small in comparison to all that is before them but we were thankful we could make a meaningful contribution. We will continue to support these two schools in the coming months as more needs arise, so stay tuned. In addition, we will host our annual November Food Drive and Christmas Guardian Ad Litem Projects. If you have any other suggestions for outreach, please don't hesitate to share it with us.
Praying Parents will be meeting this Thursday at 1:45pm in the Media Center Conference Room. This week we will be praying for the 2nd grade students by name. We would love to have any parents or grandparents of HCES students, especially 2nd grade parents/grandparents, join us to pray.

As you can imagine, many months of planning and hard work go into organizing this special event. HCES parent, Alexis Lambert was our fearless, flexible leader who chaired this event flawlessly. Thank you, Alexis, for leading the charge! We are grateful for your hard work, time and energy organizing FallFestival. In addition, our annual Fall Book Fair was in full swing last week. Book Fair chair Stephanie McKee, along with Kristen Krizner, worked tirelessly all week serving our families, teachers, and students during another fantastic Book Fair. All our volunteers were also gracious in rearranging their schedules to setup following the storm.

Grant to everyone in distress mercy, relief and refreshment through Jesus Christ our Lord. Since the start of school, a few new students have joined our HCES family. Please join us in welcoming them into the HCES community. We have listed the names and grades of the children so that you may introduce yourself and say hello when you see them on campus!
Last week’s historic Hurricane Michael was one of the strongest storms to ever hit the Florida panhandle and Big Bend area. Most of us personally know someone who has suffered great losses as a result of the storm and the need to help our friends and neighbors is strong. There are many ways to show our support. At Holy Comforter Episcopal School, we would like to offer outreach in three ways at this time.
Project 1: Hygiene Kits
The first is for immediate relief. At Friday’s Fall Festival, if you are able, please consider donating items from the following list. The children will be putting together “hygiene kits” to distribute next week. There will be a donation box at the check-in table.
Hygiene Kit Materials*
Hand towels (15 x 25 –17 x 27 inches) – Please no kitchen, cleaning, or microfiber towels
Washcloths
Combs - Must be sturdy with at least 6 inches of teeth, but no pocket combs or picks
Toenail or fingernail clippers - Please no emery boards or metal nail files
Bath-size soaps (3 oz. bar or larger) - Please no Ivory or Jergen's soap
Adult toothbrushes - single size, in original package
Adhesive bandages (¾ by 3 inches) - Common household bandages acceptable
*All items must be new. Please do not remove from packaging. Please do not wash any of the items as they will no longer be considered new. Contents of kits or the containers of kits should not be imprinted with cartoon characters, advertisements, religious, patriotic, military or camouflage symbols
Project 2: Non-Perishable Foods
The second way to help is to bring non-perishable food cans to Fall Festival to restock the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church food pantry. Mother Beth stated, “The Food Pantry is completely bare and we are not able to schedule a truck from Second Harvest because they have been depleted due to Hurricane Michael relief efforts.” If you have leftover items in your pantry that you purchased prior to the storm that you no longer need, your donation to the Food Pantry would be greatly appreciated. There will be a donation box at the check-in table during Fall Festival.
Project 3: Donations
Finally, again if you are able, consider making a donation to Episcopal Relief and Development’s Hurricane Relief Fund. This agency seeks to fund long-term relief and recovery efforts from disasters such as Hurricane Michael. You may click on the link to make a donation or bring monetary donations to the Fall Festival. If writing a check, please make it out to Holy Comforter Episcopal School and write “hurricane relief fund” on the memo line. Once all money is received we will write one check from the school to Episcopal Relief and Development. Donations will support institutions such as our sister school, Holy Nativity Episcopal School, in Panama City, who suffered extreme roof damage to their facility. Holy Nativity’s Head of School, Judy Hughes, co-chaired our own reaccreditation last February. Judy is active in Florida’s independent school organization FCIS, and is a good friend to our school. More information will follow regarding how our community can assist Holy Nativity once they determine their needs in the weeks ahead.
Once again, we are so blessed here on our Holy Comforter campus. Our thoughts and prayers remain with those who have been affected by this storm. “Compassionate God… Draw near to us in this time of sorrow and anguish, comfort those who mourn, strengthen those who are weary, encourage those in despair, and lead us all to fullness of life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.”
With a great start to 2018-2019 underway, it's time to start looking ahead to next year! If you are a current parent whose child is in school in another program, but would like for them to attend HCES in 2019-2020, we want to give your child first consideration for any spaces available. In order to do so, we need you to apply now for 2019-2020. This application will begin their enrollment process. Please click here to access the online application. Have questions? Contact Nena Martinezin the Admissions Office.
The Presidential Youth Fitness Program be offered again this year through the Lower School Physical Education Department by Coach Gonzalez. The program will evaluate aerobic capacity, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and body composition. Students are asked to attend all six sessions from 3:00 - 3:45pm on the following dates:
October 23rd
October 25th
January 29th
January 31st
April 2nd
April 4th

On Monday, October 1, we celebrated the groundbreaking of our next building, TheCommons: Performing Arts Center and Cafe. The new building, which will open in August 2019, completes our iconic colonnade and nationally recognized PK3 - 8th grade program. We are excited about the new opportunities this project will afford our students.
The entire HCES community as well as families and special guests joined together in the courtyard for the ceremony led by Head of School Peter Klekamp and Chaplain Mother Beth Pessah. Students wore new t-shirts commemorating the event.
TheCommons: Performing Arts Center and Cafe, will offer greater hands-on opportunities in the “arts” elevating our STEM program to a STEAM program. With a full performing arts theatre and dedicated classroom space for the fine arts, brain-based learning opportunities will be available for students from PK3 – 8th grade. The latest research reinforces that when children receive sequential music instruction, it can impact their proficiency in language, reading, math and cognition.
TheCommons state-of-the-art performing arts facilities will feature a full stage, acoustical paneling, theatrical lights and state of the art sound equipment, teaching students all components of a fine arts education. Students will engage in the art of reading music, playing an instrument, musical theater, set design and choral instruction.
This new space will offer additional opportunity for our performing arts productions without the disruption to our physical education classes and athletic program, therefore, elevating both our fine arts programs and our championship athletic program.
We hope that your family will join our school community as we "Complete the Colonnade!" For more information about this exciting project, email hwilbourn@hces.org or call Holly Wilbourn at 850-383-1007.

HCES Middle School students participated in “SeeYou at the Pole” this morning, September 26th. “See You at the Pole,” traditionally held on the fourth Wednesday in September is a student-initiated, student organized, and student-led event during which students meet at the flagpole to pray for their school, friends, teachers, and their nation.
Started in 1990 by a group of teenagers in Burleson, Texas, “Seeyou at the Pole” has grown to a worldwide celebration, On September 12, 1990, 45,000 students gathered around flagpoles in 4 different states. Today, over 3 million students in the United States celebrate “Seeyou the Pole” each year, as well as students in 20 countries worldwide.
At the HCES ceremony, middle school FCA students organized and led their peers in prayer as they gathered around the flagpole at the front of the school.
In order to promote the health and wellness of all members of our HCES community, please remember that if children come down with a fever, they must stay home until they are fever-free (HCES policy 100°F or below) for 24 hours without the aid of fever-reducing medications.
Students who are contagious with illnesses such as strep throat, conjunctivitis, impetigo, etc. should be kept at home until they have been on antibiotics for 24 hours or cleared by their physician to return to school.
Remember, as we see the start of cold and flu season, HANDWASHING is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of illness. Flu vaccines are also strongly recommended for all ages for the prevention of the flu.

We are, as always, in awe by the generosity shown by our parents, grandparents, faculty, and friends through gifts to the Crusader Fund, new pledges to our capital campaign, and support of our special events like Gala and the Crusader Cup golf tournament. The hundreds of names in the report represent far more than a donation. All of the people listed have a specific reason – and perhaps even a personal story – that has motivated them to support the school financially. Maybe it was to honor a special teacher or a grandchild or to help build new facilities. Whatever the personal reason behind their gifts, our donors have made a positive difference and for that, we are truly grateful.
Publishing an annual report reminds us how fortunate we are to have individuals and families who care so deeply about Holy Comforter. We continue to grow stronger every year because of the incredible support, beyond tuition dollars, we receive from our parents, grandparents, alumni parents, alumni, faculty and staff and HCES friends. We are grateful and thank you for your support at any level - you make a huge difference in the education of our children.
Bring Your Parents to Church (Episcopal School Sunday) was amazing! I want to thank some people, in particular, for their extra effort and help as we pulled this service together.
Our readers Charlie Coughlin (grade 3) and Graham Resavage (grade 5) for their time and effort. You did an amazing job!
Thank you to Ian Efthim (grade 4) for serving as the crucifer at the service and Peyton Cole (grade 1) for creatively choosing a horse and rider to put in the surprise box for the children's sermon.
Ms. Jennifer Thrasher and the fifth grade choir for all of their work in preparing and performing the music for Sunday. You made some beautiful music and I thank you for your hard work and lovely voices.
Mr. Andy Nathan for helping with music preparation.
A Special thanks to Amelia Jones and Kate Bulloch, Middle School students, for their artwork which was used to design the bulletin cover (Amelia) and the facebook and email ad (Kate) to promote Bring your Parents to Church Sunday. Your willingness to produce such lovely art on short notice is greatly appreciated. Thank you both.
Thanks also to Ms. Amy Vernon and Mrs. Grady for helping to make the artwork opportunity happen.
Thank you to Mr. Klekamp, Ms. Hagen, Ms. Proctor and the Church and School Committee for their input and advice in preparing this service and everyonewho has helped in many big and small ways to bring all the pieces of this event together.
The 2018-2019 Crusader Fund kicks off this week! Please keep an eye on your mailboxes for a brochure and letter with details on how you can make a bigger difference in your child's experience at HCES. We are proud to report that we already have 100% participation from Faculty & Staff contributing over $14,000!
As you know, this will be an exciting year at HCES! The addition of The Commons: A Performing Arts Center and Café, will complete the colonnade and PK3 through 8th grade campus, a mere 20 years after the first students stepped foot on Fleischmann Road. In addition to The Commons, the school will also be creating a Middle School and athletic drop-off and pick-up lane off of Welanuee Road and a new athletic field with lights. We feel these additions will be necessary to relieve traffic congestion on campus and provide us with a field where our Crusader athletes can play under the lights.
We have created a short 21 question survey to gauge your thoughts about our current construction projects. For every family that completes this survey by Friday, September 21, 2018, their children will be able to have a free dress day on the following Friday, September 28.
The first meeting of our Praying Parents kicks off tomorrow, September 20 at 1:45pm in the Media Center Conference Room. All parents are invited and welcome to attend.

An invitation and response form are available on the website. We know that many of our applicants for admission are a direct result of the enthusiasm our current families have for Holy Comforter. We also know that our students are our best ambassadors and we encourage them to do everything they can to send positive messages about HCES in our community.

The HCES Boys XC team had a fantastic showing at the Miller Landing Madness Meet on Saturday, August 18th. The team score was comprised of the top 5 finishers from each team. The Crusaders were represented, in order according to their finish, by Will Winsor (7th grade), Henry Fernandez (6th grade), Barnes Ray (6th grade), Matthew Wilbourn (7th grade) and Everett Heckman (7th grade). The result of this calculation was a tie with Swift Creek Middle School! That meant the judges looked for the 6th finishing member of each team for the tiebreaker. 7th grader Aiden Merritt finished in front of his rival to seal the victory for the Crusaders! It was, as always, a true team effort! We are so proud of these, and of all of our student-athletes! Holy Comforter Athletics: Together, we are.....Creative, Bold, Determined!

The PA kicked off 2018-19 school year with a "Meet and Greet Sweet Treat" Ice Cream Social while families were meeting teachers and preparing for the start of school. Parents, students and faculty enjoyed Kona Ice and Momma P's Ice Cream in the courtyard on Tuesday afternoon. Today, teachers eagerly awaited the children’s arrival as they have been preparing their classrooms for the new year. Students and families filled the halls and enjoyed seeing their friends as they excitedly jumped back into the school routine.
After dropping off their children, enjoyed coffee and fellowship in the school courtyard at the PA's Back to School Coffee. A big “thank you” to our Parent Association President Heather Brown and President-elect Amy Hollingsworth for organizing such fun-filled back to school events.
On Thursday, May 24, the Holy Comforter Episcopal School 8th grade class graduated in a ceremony held in the school's Student Center. The service, led by Head of School Peter Klekamp, welcomed hundreds of parents, families, and friends. A traditional chapel service was followed by the presentation of awards and diplomas. Two 8th grade students, Ryan McKee and Kate Krizner addressed the audience, reflecting on their years spent at HCES. Students, families, and friends then took a trip down memory lane as they previewed the much-anticipated annual “8th Grade Slideshow” which takes a look back over the students’ career at HCES. After the ceremony, graduates and their families gathered in the courtyard for a celebratory reception organized by parent Christy Dessi.
Prior to graduation, the eighthgraders wrapped up their final months at Holy Comforter with a myriad of activities and exciting moments. First, a “surprise” graduation breakfast was sponsored by the Advancement Office, and the 8thgraders received a class t-shirt and were taught what it means to be an alumnus of Holy Comforter. The students and their families attended a Baccalaureate Ceremony on Monday, May 14th. At the end of the service, the Holy Comforter bell was rung once for each student, a yearly tradition that has become especially meaningful to the students and their families. On May 21st, after an awards’ ceremony, the 8thgrade students visited Camp Weed in Live Oak for a two-day retreat. The retreat provided a time of reflection and closure for the students as they move into high school. They participated in devotions and team-building activities, as well as a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, including swimming, singing praise music, and engaging in fun relay races. Students enjoyed spending time together during their last days at Holy Comforter. Congratulations to the Class of 2018, our newest Holy Comforter alumni!
We still have a few spots open in certain grade levels for the 2018-2019 school year. If you meet anyone over the summer interested in learning more they can call Nena Martinez for more information.
HolyComforter's 8th grade class of 2014 (30 students in all) will soon graduate from 5 local high schools (Leon, Lincoln, Chiles, Maclay, and JPII) and Florida Virtual School. Although information is still coming to us about scholarships and awards that they have been awarded, we are so proud of their accomplishments that we could not wait to share it with you.
Individual Achievements of Note:
Ginger Lucas is John Paul II Catholic High School’s Class of 2018 valedictorian! She plans to attend the University of Florida as a Florida Academic Scholar and study aerospace engineering. She was also nominated for the Best and Brightest award for Science and Health. Congratulations Ginger!
Eli Murphy (Leon) was accepted in the FSU Film School, which has been described as ‘one of the top motion picture schools in the nation.’ Admission is extremely selective and competitive; in fact, this year they only accepted 18 students from 450 applications. Eli was also nominated for the Best and Brightest award for Technology.
Marshall Murphy (Leon) will begin his college career, next week, in New York City at NYU studying two years worth of French in 12 weeks before he spends his freshman year at NYU Paris in their Global Liberal Studies (GLS) program.
Rebekah Hopkins (Leon) will be attending Belmont University in Nashville, TN where she received a merit scholarship to study Commercial Music/Vocal Performance. For the last 3 years she has been the lead singer of the local band, The Good Little Chickens.
The Florida State University Honors Program provides an enriched curriculum and special opportunities for exceptional, high-achieving students, and only accepts 400 students into its program from thousands of incoming FSU freshman. In fact, in 2017, this program average academic profile of the Honors Program applicants that were admitted was: 4.4 weighted GPA; 33 ACT composite; and a 1500 SAT total. Congratulations to Connor Klekamp (Leon), Kennedy Knisley(Leon) and Maddie Powell (Leon) for their acceptance into this prestigious program.
We have 2 graduates who plan to continue their athletic pursuits in college as well. Kate Carter(Leon) and Julianna Heuchan (Maclay) will both play soccer for Stetson University and Randolph Macon College respectively. Best of luck to you!
Overall, 77% of the HCES Class of 2014 will graduate with honors from their respective high schools.

This year we asked our teachers, "What specific items would enhance your classroom and teaching, what would your students benefit from, what is on your wish list?" We call this The Crusader Fund Needs Assessment. Our Crusader Fund has been strong this year but based on their needs we are currently $13,000.00 short to fulfill all the requests the teachers submitted.
With that in mind, Meghan will begin making phone calls to our previous Crusader Fund supporters in hopes of their continued generosity. If you'd prefer to skip the panic of seeing "HCES" on your caller ID click here to make your gift. Please remember, no gift is too small. Every single gift we receive will be one step closer to fulfilling our teachers needs and reaching our parent participation goals. Questions? Please contact Meghan Wilson.
LS Student Council is sponsoring a "SWEET" celebration on the last day of school, May 25th. LS students are asked to wear their brightest color shirt with uniform bottoms. Many thanks to title sponsor Thielen+ Tax and Business Consulting and all of our participants and sponsors. Without you, this tournament would not be possible. We hope you will join us next year for the 13th Annual Crusader Cup!

On Friday and Saturday, April 27th and 28th our Middle School "Opening Night" Class presented Disney's The Lion King, JR. during a daytime showing for local preschools and our school community as well as two nighttime showings for HCES families and friends.
Thirty-two middle school students worked tirelessly to create this production as part of the Opening Night class. As the tale goes... Rafiki gathers the animals of the Pridelands to welcome the newborn cub of King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi. The king’s jealous brother, Scar, no longer heir to the throne, skips the ceremony, upsetting Mufasa. Time passes and young Simba grows into a curious young lion. Mufasa explains the circle of life and that young Simba will one day be king of the Pridelands. As part of his plan to gain power, Scar blames young Simba for the king’s death and tells him to run away and never return. Scar assumes the throne, uniting lions and hyenas under his dark reign. Young Simba meets Timon and Pumbaa who take him to their “worry-free” jungle home and teach him “Hakuna Matata”. Under Scar’s reign, the Pridelands are nearly destroyed when Rafiki appears and helps Simba remember his father. With newfound courage, Simba agrees to return and confront his uncle. The truth of Mufasa’s murder is revealed and Scar runs away, pursued by angry hyenas. With peace restored in the Pridelands, Simba takes his place as king and the circle of life continues.
Since August, the Opening Night students have worked tirelessly on this beloved tale. Every part of this performance was touched by the student’s creativity and passion, from the sets to the props to the costume design to the choreography and even the playbill. They have had a hand in every aspect of this performance. Focusing on communication, collaboration and problem-solving, students were able to take 21st Century Skills and use them creatively in the performing arts to bring to life the final production.
Foremost among those to thank for this performance is our incredibly talented Director Christina Wiggins. Without her enormous creativity and talent, we would not have a show at all. In addition, a special thank you to Jessica Applegate (Musical Director), and Hannah Bergstrom (Choreographer) who assisted greatly in creating this production.
The middle school Opening Night class is a year-long elective open to 6th - 8th grade students. This class introduces students to major components of theatre production from script to stage including casting, lighting, theatre technology, directing, marketing, set design, and a wide range of acting techniques. Not only did the students enjoy the art of acting, but they experienced a hands-on class that exposed them to many aspects of theatre.
Attention Rising 6th Grade Parents: It is time to order a computer for your new middle school student. You may choose to bring a computer from home or you may purchase a computer from HCES. If you choose to purchase your child's computer from HCES, our Tech Team will take care of any repairs and they won't cost you a dime.
HCES computers come with:
3 years manufacturer's warranty
3 years accidental damage, theft and loss insurance
All service and repairs coordinated by HCES Tech staff, at no charge
Computer problems can cause stress for middle school students. Purchasing your child's laptop through HCES allows students to remain focused on school work instead of dealing with computer issues.
Last week, we were showered with love and gratitude from our students and parents during Faculty and Staff Appreciation Week. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for making us feel so special! We are extremely grateful to Michelle Hewitt, Faculty and Staff Appreciation Chair, and her team of volunteers for creating a fun flamingo themed week including gourmet lunches, a delicious breakfast, Lucky Goat cold brew, sweet treats and gift cards. Many thanks, HCES Faculty and Staff
On Monday evening, we welcomed high school seniors to campus for a very special reunion with their classmates. The HCES 8thgrade class of 2014 was greeted by former teachers and enjoyed a traditional chapel service in the church. Following chapel and a little Q & A, alumni seniors and their parents enjoyed a reception where they reminisced watching their 8th grade slideshow from 4 years ago and a special message from Mr. Rick Bunnell, who was their Middle School Head. Families and students filled the evening with memories, reflecting on their years spent as part of the Holy Comforter family. Before leaving, the alumni played on the playgrounds, toured their old classrooms and rang Penny the Bell - aways a favorite! The returning students are truly a testament to the Holy Comforter family as they have already achieved such wonderful accomplishments during their high school careers. More exciting information on their high school accomplishments and college choices will be coming soon. We wish them all the best and will always welcome them back with open arms. Congratulations class of 2018!
Tomorrow we celebrate Crusader Fund Day! This is when The Crusader Fund will start filling the gap between our operating budget and the amount charged in tuition. As warm weather approaches, please encourage your children to drink more water. It is easier to maintain a healthy fluid balance during physical activity if you begin in a well-hydrated state. Please make sure your child is drinking plenty of water at home, as well as bringing a water bottle to school each day. Soft drinks, coffee, and energy drinks are no substitutes for water; they may contain water but they also contain dehydrating ingredients. Students are encouraged to keep their water bottles on their desks and drink throughout the day to stay hydrated. During PE, students are given regular water breaks to maintain hydration, however, it is most important that they start off well hydrated each day.
Other things you can do to help your child avoid dehydration include applying sunscreen at home and sending a hat to school that protects the head, neck, face, and ears. Additionally, to prevent heat-related stress, having your child wear light-colored, thin, and loose clothing that allows for good airflow helps sweat easily evaporate.
The 3rd grade is in the lead with a Crusader Fund grade level participation of 65%! Coming in second place is the 1st Grade with 54.72% and third place goes to the PK3 with 53.57%!
Our school-wide parent participation goal is 70% and currently, we have 46.2% participation. So we need everyone to take ACTION this April. Please, no matter the size, make your gift to the Crusader Fund. Click here to take action and make your impact or contact Meghan Wilson if you would like to pay cash or check or if you would like to set up a pledge.

The Middle School Opening Night Class presents the "Lion King JR" this Friday and Saturday, April 27th & 28th at 7:00pm in the Student Center.
Over the last few months, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students have worked tirelessly to bring to stage such fun characters from the musical "Lion King JR." Students have taken part in the production assisting with directing, costumes, marketing and more! Tickets are on sale for $5 each.
On Thursday, April 26th, we will celebrate a very important day at HCES...Crusader Fund Day! This is when we begin to "bridge the gap" and the Crusader Fund kicks in to gear.
Like most independent schools, tuition does not cover the full cost to operate a school of our caliber. The Crusader Fund, "bridges the gap" between Holy Comforter's operating budget and the amount charged in tuition, which is $1,340.00 per student, this year. So, this month we are challenging our parent community to take action and participate! Your generosity and participation matters at any level. Currently, we are looking for 22 families to take action to reach 50% parent participation. That will put us in prime shape to reach our overall goal of 70% parent participation.
Please share with your friends and encourage them to join us as we strive to make HCES the best it can be!Click here to take action and make your impact! Would you like to donate but are not able to do so today? No problem! Send Meghan Wilson an email to set up a pledge for you to pay at a later date.
We appreciate your consideration, participation and generosity!
You may have seen the signs hanging around the school. Our last outreach for the year is another canned food drive. Holy Comforter Church provides food for many families every Saturday. The summer is an especially lean time with kids home during the day. Please help us fill the food closet now through May 11th. Be a food dude!
In April, over 120 grandparents and grandchildren attended the Annual Book Fair "Grand" Event and Lunch. To those of you who have generously made a gift to our annual giving campaign, The Crusader Fund, thank you! We are immensely grateful for your support and generosity. As of April 1, 2018, we have raised $110,067.96 and 151 of our 385 families have participated (39.27%). Included below is the link to our Donor Proof. Please take a moment to review and be sure we have recognized you appropriately and correctly. If you have any questions or concerns, let Meghan Wilson know and she will be happy to make a correction or change.
Like all independent schools, there is a "gap" between our operating budget and the amount charged in tuition. In order to "fill the gap," Holy Comforter relies on voluntary contributions from parents, faculty, staff, board members, grandparents, and friends. A gift to The Crusader Fund increases classroom innovation, offers tuition assistance to those who qualify and covers basic operational needs. This year, we will depend on Crusader Fund dollars to cover Holy Comforter's operational costs beginning April 26th through the remainder of the year.
Our school-wide parent participation goal is 70% which equates to an additional 119 families making a gift. If your family has not made a gift or pledge, we encourage you to prayerfully consider donating this month, at any level. Every dollar truly matters and makes an invaluable impact on our campus, our faculty and most importantly, your children. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Meghan Wilson or Holly Wilbourn. We are more than happy to speak with you.
To make your gift, please click here or mail or drop a check off at the front office. If you would prefer to include your contribution in your May Smart Tuition Account, let us know via email.

6th grade students are worked in groups to make planetariums of one of the seasons' night skies. Several constellations can be viewed in each 20-foot x 20-foot planetarium. Each of the students became a mini-expert on one of the included constellations as part of the project. After transferring the constellations from a paper 1-inch-by-1-inch grid to the plastic sheet's 1-foot-by-1-foot grid, the students poke holes where the constellations' major stars can be seen. The students then put in a 'tunnel' for the fan (which inflate the planetarium) and a door for easy access. Each 20-foot by 20-foot planetarium can hold an entire class of students. Once inside, the holes that were punched look like stars in the sky!
Lower School students have been making trips to the planetariums to take tours of the night sky as each Middle School student talks about 'their' constellation. Hand-on learning at its best!

STEAM, an acronym and 21st century educational buzz word, stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and math. It is important to understand that STEAM occurs in multiple combinations and content areas. It doesn't have to be all-inclusive to be effective. At HCES, STEAM is implemented into each one of our classrooms in multiple combinations throughout the year. Both 5th and 7th grade students created projects for this year's fair held on Tuesday, March 7th.
STEAM Fair, the Physical Science yearly culmination project, incorporates all the components of the acronym through a hands-on, student-driven, peer-reviewed, project-based activity. 7th grade students began their projects during the first quarter of the school year by selecting, researching and building. Then, during the third quarter, they formulated testable questions, experimented, collected data and wrote a research paper based on their findings in a cross-curricular assignment in Science and Language Arts. While Mr. Davis managed the building and scientific process of the assignment, Mrs. Wiggins taught students how to write an abstract, construct a research paper, and put their findings into written form.
To make the projects more engaging for our young learners, we went "old school" with trifold board presentations. According to feedback from students, they really enjoyed talking about their projects with other students, especially the lower school students.
5th grade students worked with Mrs. Malone in the STEM Lab to create their projects.
From hydropower to robotics to coding to droids and more, they did an incredible job constructing and presenting to their peers and parents!
It should be noted that this project from conception to execution was done at school and 100% the efforts of the student. We are extremely proud of their efforts and accomplishments.

You are invited to observe the Lenten Season with the parish of Holy Comforter. Lent is a season to contemplate seriously the claims of Jesus death and resurrection on our lives and we do so by making this a time of self-evaluation and re-dedication.
One of the disciplines that Holy Comforter invites people to share is the labyrinth. Walking the labyrinth provided an opportunity to refocus our lives and to divest of the things that distract from finding ourselves in Christ. There are guides to help you engage in this discipline. They can be found right next to the labyrinth itself, which is just to the right of the church, between the church and the media center of the school. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten Season. Our parish invites you to mark this day at either 12:15 or 7pm.

The Kearney Center provides 24-hour comprehensive emergency services to individuals experiencing, or on-the-verge of experiencing, homelessness. The facility serves as a point of entry into assistance by coordinating services and responding to the immediate needs of individuals and families until appropriate permanent housing can be arranged (kearneycenter.org).
Cold weather increases the number of people seeking services at The Kearney Center. When there is a severe drop in temperature, they serve over 400 individuals and provide over 900 meals per day.
The Student Council outreach project for February will be to to help the homeless in Tallahassee by donating the following items to The Kearney Center. Holy Comforter Episcopal School is making a difference in our community.

Holy Comforter Episcopal School hosted the 9th installment of the Lecture Series on Saturday, January 27th featuring former FSU and NFL safety, philanthropist and Rhodes Scholar Dr. Myron Rolle as he presented “The Enlightened Warrior.”
Approximately 300 guest including HCES parents, students and members of the Tallahassee community attended to hear Dr. Rolle's inspiring message. He took us on a journey bringing us to where he is today as a neurosurgeon resident at Massachusetts General Hospital. He shared stories, experiences and things he learned along the way. Dr. Rolle stated his parents sacrificed a way of life, moving from the Bahamas to give him and his brothers the opportunity that citizenship in the United States could offer. Through that sacrifice, Dr. Rolle has made the most of each opportunity presented and has become an inspiration and role model for many. In addition to his academic, athletic and professional achievements, Dr. Rolle began the Myron L. Rolle Foundation in 2009 dedicated to the support of three health, wellness, and education initiatives benefiting children and families in need. He created "Our Way to Health," an anti-childhood obesity program for Native Americans that began in the Seminole Tribe of Florida, then through the partnership of the US Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar expanded to the Navajo, Hopi, and Pueblo tribes. In conjunction with the Florida Department of Children and Families and the Florida National Guard, Myron created the Myron Rolle Wellness and Leadership Academy designed to empower, equip, and uplift 100 Florida foster kids in a week full of leadership/nutritional training, character building, and guest speakers. He is also building a free health clinic in Exuma, Bahamas, the homeland of his grandparents, to better service the residents of the family island.
At the conclusion of the lecture, Dr. Rolle answered several questions from the audience and took the time to meet and greet guests. It was truly an honor to host Dr. Rolle and have the opportunity to share his story with our community.
The Holy Comforter Episcopal School Lecture Series provides a community forum where individuals will gather to hear engaging and enlightening conversation. Speakers have presented annual lectures on meaningful topics such as science and technology, education, parenting skills and civic leadership. We would like to thank our presenting sponsor, Hancock Bank, for their continued support of the Holy Comforter Episcopal School Lecture Series.
As you may know, Holy Comforter will welcome our FCIS/SAIS re-accreditation team to campus beginning this Sunday. It is a culmination of months of preparing; in fact, the survey you participated in this past fall was a part of that process. Not to worry, you can still play a vital role in next week's visit! Here's how....
The Crusader Fund “bridges the gap” between tuition and the actual cost of operating the school. All proceeds increase classroom innovation giving our teachers the tools and opportunities to enhance their classrooms, offer tuition assistance to those who qualify and cover basic operational needs. Now would be an ideal time to participate with a gift to the Crusader Fund because most importantly, your participation signifies your belief in the school, our teachers, and students. We invite you to join us and the entire Holy Comforter faculty and staff by making a meaningful gift. For an easy, one-time gift click here. If now is not the time but you would like to contribute in the coming months, please contact Meghan Wilson to set up a pledge or add your gift to you Smart Tuition account. Currently, 36% of our parent community has participated this school year. This is a great start, but we are looking for 133 more families to reach our 70% parent participation goal.
Thank you, in advance, for your consideration and support of The Crusader Fund and Holy Comforter Episcopal School.
In Mrs. Young's middle school World Geography class students who need/want to stand have access to four standing desks provided by generous donations to the Crusader Fund. "These desks help students focus and allow them to do their best. If you notice, this student is taking advantage of the footrest which allows him to stand in the most comfortable position for focusing and typing. My future wish is to have an entire classroom of standing desks with stools so students can sit and/or stand when needed without having to move from their assigned seat." - Mrs. Young
