STEM Saturday - January 25th

We are thrilled to announce a new event for Holy Comforter – STEM Saturday, a FREE event for students in grades K-8 to participate in a fun day of hands on interactive science experiences hosted by Holy Comforter STEM teachers. On Saturday, January 25 from 9am to 12 noon, elementary students and their parents can participate in up to 3 different sessions lasting approximately 45 minutes each and middle school students can participate in up to 2 different sessions lasting approximately 90 minutes each. Each session will focus on one core science concept that will include both technology and engineering and every session will provide a take away for the student to repeat the activity at home. In addition to these exciting sessions, we will also have a flight similator from Coaxis International, compliments of HCES parent Christophe Reglat, and the Sea Mobile Marine Life Educational Program and Traveling Aquarium from Gulf Specimen Marine Lab on campus performing on-going demonstrations.

The purpose of STEM Saturday is to welcome the Tallahassee community at large to our campus and to showcase our unique STEM program. Current Holy Comforter students are welcomed to attend STEM Saturday, and are encouraged to invite a non-Holy Comforter friend to attend as their guest. The classes will parallel what our students are doing everyday in their STEM classes.  Below is a list of the offerings:

Grades  K-2

Lego Robotics
Students will build and program a robotic airplane that senses motion. When programmed this plane will change speed and propeller direction when it senses motion.

3-2-1 Blast Off!
In this activity students will build and test a rocket just like a NASA engineer. They will be investigating variables that make for a successful launch and rocket flight.

Rubberband car
Students will be a mechanical engineer as they design and build a car with a working rubber band motor. Once built, we will investigate the potential and kinetic energy that can effect the car’s distance and speed.

Grades 3-5

3-2-1 Blast Off!
In this activity students will build and test a rocket just like a NASA engineer. They will be investigating variables that make for a successful launch and rocket flight.

Putt – Putt Steam Boats
Students will design and build a boat that uses a lit candle to motor around in the water. They will investigate how this boat converts chemical energy into mechanical energy to make this boat motor through the water.

Hot Air Balloon
How do hot air balloons work? Students will investigate, design, and build a hot air balloon that will soar through  the air! They will investigate what aspects create a successful balloon flight and how they can ascend and descend.

Middle School Grades 6-8

3-2-1 Blast Off!
In this activity students will build and test a rocket just like a NASA engineer. They will be investigating variables that make for a successful launch and rocket flight.

Hot Air Balloon
