Hydration in Warm Weather

As warm weather approaches, please encourage your children to drink more water.  It is easier to maintain a healthy fluid balance during physical activity if you begin in a well-hydrated state.  Please make sure your child is drinking plenty of water at home, as well as bringing a water bottle to school each day. Soft drinks, coffee, and energy drinks are no substitutes for water; they may contain water but they also contain dehydrating ingredients. Students are encouraged to keep their water bottles on their desks and drink throughout the day to stay hydrated. During PE, students are given regular water breaks to maintain hydration, however, it is most important that they start off well hydrated each day.

Other things you can do to help your child avoid dehydration include applying sunscreen at home and sending a hat to school that protects the head, neck, face, and ears. Additionally, to prevent heat-related stress, having your child wear light-colored, thin, and loose clothing that allows for good airflow helps sweat easily evaporate.
