Meet in the Middle: 5th Grade Jump Up Day - January 16th

Each year, our current 5th grade students "jump up" to Middle School for a day to get a sneak peek of the Middle School experience - Meet in the Middle: A 5th Grade Jump-up Day on Thursday, January 16, 2025. Once again, we are extending that opportunity and welcoming any local 5th graders not currently enrolled at HCES to join our 5th graders and spend a day on campus as they experience Middle School classrooms, enjoy lunch in The Commons, and a pep rally! Last year, we welcomed 7 new students to our middle school who attended this event.

Morning arrival for our visitors is at 8:00 am. All parents (visiting and current 5th grade parents) will meet in the Donor Room for a morning discussion led by Amy Vernon, Head of the Middle School. You’ll learn about the changes to expect in Middle School and how our program uniquely assists children in making these necessary transitions through adolescence while preparing them for success in High School and beyond.

Students will join with other 5th graders who will be visiting Middle School classes, and then share their experiences over lunch in our Commons Cafe. Other fun activities will follow in the afternoon, including a peek into our elective classes, a pep rally, a current Middle school student panel Q & A, and maybe even a basketball game after school!

Registration is necessary for visitors so that we can make Middle School class schedules for our guests. Please use the form on this page to register. This event is FREE and open to the public. If you are a current family, you do not need to register.

More information can be found at www.hces.org/meetinthemiddle. Please jump on Facebook and share the event with your friends. We are so excited to welcome these new faces to a day on campus.

    Sid & Kristin Bigham, Jr.
    Carol Freedman Barrood
    Carter, Elyse & Ida Thompson
Kathy Zimmerman Tyler, DDS & Wade Tyler

    About the Book:
A striking rendition of Alice in Wonderland transported to a shimmering Alaskan tundra, in Jan Brett’s rich signature style. When Alice spies a white rabbit checking his pocket watch before hippity-hopping down a crevasse in an Alaskan glacier, she knows she must follow him. And so she pops down the rabbit hole, into a world of absurd personalities, topsy-turvy action, and laugh-out-loud silliness. Favorite characters like Cheshire Cat and the Duchess and King and Queen come to life as vibrant animals native to Alaska making this classic tale shine through a fresh lens, certain to appeal to readers of all ages.

    About Jan Brett:
Jan Brett is the New York Times #1 bestselling artist/author of over 40 picture books. Her books have been chosen as “Best Children’s Books of the Year” by The New Yorker, Parents, Redbook, and others. Brett lives in Norwell, MA.

  • Middle School Fall Conference Day

Who: Parents and students (we encourage you to bring your middle school student to the conference)
    When/Where: Friday, November 1st, 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.; Student Center.

Format: Each Middle School core subject area teacher will have a table along the perimeter of the Student Center to conduct his/her conferences. There are no scheduled appointments; you may meet with as many or as few of your child’s teachers as you like, in any order you wish.

Please note - while all core subject area teachers are available, many of them teach multiple grade levels and a large number of students. We suggest choosing 3-4 teachers with whom to meet on Conference Day. If you would like to meet with all of your child’s teachers, please anticipate spending approximately 2 hours on campus, or email to set up a separate conference day/time.

    Additional Information:
    • It is likely other parents will be waiting to meet with teachers as well, so individual conferences are limited to a maximum of 10 minutes. If you need to meet with a teacher for a longer period of time, you may certainly make an appointment to meet with that teacher on another day.
    • If you would like to speak with the following elective teachers who are not available on the 1st, please email them to set up an alternative conference time: Mrs. Hale (MS Art), Mr. Nathan (School of Rock) Mr. Long (Guitar), Mr. Williams (Woodworking), Dr. Paschall (TechCrewsaders), Dr. Spengler (MS Band) or Mrs. Ogden (Opening Night)
We hope you will be able to make it on the 1st, to work with us in partnership to maximize your child’s education in Middle School. Please contact the Middle School Office if you have any questions.

  • Fun with Friends - October 12th

We are thrilled to share an event with you - Fun with Friends and Open House will take place this Saturday, October 12, 2024. We are inviting you and your friends with little ones ages 2 - 6 (rising PK3 - kindergarten students) for a morning of play and an Open House. We’ll meet in The Commons Outdoor Pavillion for registration, coffee, and sensory bin fun. Then we’ll move to the preschool and kindergarten classrooms for age-level play with our PK & K teachers and you’ll have the opportunity to make a fun craft with your little one.  We’ll round out the morning with time on the playgrounds.

**We know several families have friends and family members who evacuated and are staying with them during the storm. Please feel free to bring them, as well!

Below is the flyer for this Saturday morning event so you can share it with your friends. If you’re comfortable with social media posting, you can share the Facebook Event for Fun With Friends and Open House here. Or, use this link for more information: https://www.hces.org/admissions/fun-with-friends-october-12th. Registration isn’t mandatory, but it would really help to have an idea of how many children to expect.

We know the best way to get new families on our campus is through a personal invitation from a current family. We hope you will bring your friends and share the “holy comfortable” experience with them.

In addition, if you know of someone who is interested but cannot attend or is looking at other grade levels, we welcome them to come for a visit anytime. They can schedule a time to drop by with me at 850-383-1007 or through email at mwilson@hces.org
  • October Food Drive to Benefit Holy Comforter Church Food Pantry

This year, for our annual Fall Food Drive to benefit the Holy Comforter Church Food Pantry, Lower School and Middle School classrooms will begin collecting non-perishable food items on Tuesday, October 9th. Donations will be gathered and delivered on Thursday, October 17th by our Middle School NHJS members.

The Holy Comforter Food Pantry is the second largest Food Bank in Tallahassee serving as a Second Harvest distribution site open the 1st through 4th Saturdays from 9 am to 11 am. Food insecurity is a lack of consistent access to enough safe and nutritious food for an active, healthy, and productive life. It can be cyclical, or episodic - associated with a crisis like the current devastation from Hurricane Helene. Food Insecurity is at 9.9% in the state of Florida. This means that almost 10% of households do not have enough food regularly.

As you prepare to give, remember, we’re always in need of the “super six” items: canned fruits, vegetables, canned meats (tuna, chicken), cereal, hearty soup/stew, and peanut butter. We would ask that you not give industrial-sized or bulk-sized items

II Corinthians 9:11-12 "You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God."

Parents, please note that the end of year report cards (4th 9 weeks) for middle school AND lower school will be mailed home AFTER the school year ends. Please be sure that your account is current by the end of the school year, as all accounts that are in arrears will delay the mailing of your child(ren)'s report card. Your account includes tuition, extended day, athletic fees, and lunch balances. *Please log in and verify your mailing address is correct, as well.
  • What happens if I have a lunch balance at the end of the year?

If your child is returning, the lunch balance rolls over to the next year. If your child graduates, you will have the option to transfer your graduate’s balance to a younger sibling, contribute to the annual fund, or be refunded. For those students leaving at the end of the school year, if your child’s balance is less than $10, it will be contributed to the HCES Annual Fund and you will receive a credit for the donation unless notifying the business office of a requested refund. Please expect any refunds to be mailed by mid-June.
  • Access Key Cards

If you happen to have a door access key card, please return it to the front office. We know it's easy to forget to turn them back in, but we are low in supply and would like to avoid ordering more, if possible. Thank you for your help in this!
  • Student Led Conferences - Wednesday, May 1

On Wednesday, May 1st, we will have our annual Middle School Student-led Conferences for 6th and 7th graders. There will be no classes for middle school students on this day. Conferences are scheduled by TARGET class in 20-minute increments. These conferences are a great self-reflection activity for students and an opportunity for parents and students to engage in a conversation about the school year.

    Goals for the Process:
    Students will -
    • Take ownership of their performance
    • Practice organizational and communication skills by compiling a presentation of their academic year
    • Engage in productive conversations about school
    • Identify strengths and areas for improvement
    • Critically and honestly evaluate their performance
    • Use evidence to support their analysis of their performance in school
    • Use the analysis of their progress to make plans for improvement
    • Set ambitious but attainable goals for the next school year
    • Determine and verbalize what help they might need to achieve their goals
Though not required, we encourage participation in the conference opportunity. You can sign up for a session by using the sign-up links below. Please sign up by your 6th or 7th grader's TARGET teacher. Conferences are in their TARGET classroom unless you are notified otherwise.

  • Athletic Banquet Recap

On Tuesday, April 16, we celebrated the culmination of the HCES athletic year with an incredible evening of fellowship and awards at the annual banquet. Over 400 students and their families attended as we recognized 147 middle school student-athletes for their hard work this year across 12 sports in Crusader Athletics. Awards were given for each sport and two 8th grade students, Nicky Fiore and Bailey Dyle spoke, reflecting on their time as Crusader athletes. The final award of the night, given to a male and female 8th grader, is the Timothy award.

The origins of the Timothy Award can be traced to the Book of 1 Timothy, Chapter 4, Verse 12. The Timothy Award is the highest honor that is given from our Crusader Athletic Department.  It requires the nomination and support of faculty members, and is voted on by our entire middle school student body.  The Timothy Award is given annually to one male athlete and one female athlete who exhibit the qualities which the Apostle Paul witnessed from his young protege Saint Timothy of Ephesus.

In spite of their youth, these Crusaders represent themselves, their families, their school and their teams in a positive way through their actions, their words, and their sportsmanship.

    Male Winner: Caleb Knipple
    Female Winner: Harper McKee

Thank you to everyone involved in putting together an unforgettable night for our student-athletes and their families, including our banquet chair, Colby Lindsay, and co-chair Katherine Boland!  Thank you to all the parents and coaches for their time and effort each day on and off the fields. Go Crusaders!

On Wednesday, March 27th, we hosted a social hour for our HCES alumni and families of HCES alumni. The evening welcomed so many wonderful members of the HCES community back to campus! Guests enjoyed jazz music by the Nygel Anderson Quartet, wonderful food by Chef Erik Fisher (an alumni parent) of Simply Entertaining and the event was sponsored by Hummingbird Wine (owned by Mairin Moore and Stuart Nagy-Kato ’00) - a very special thank you to them for their generous contributions! This was the first event to welcome families back to campus in preparation for our 70th anniversary that will kick-off next year and run through 2026! We loved seeing so many familiar faces and look forward to doing it again in the future!

    A Prayer for Holy Week

    Holy Lord,
We go with you this week from life to death --
    and to a joyous resurrection.
We remember your example of sacrifice and service, and your saving grace.
As we gather this week, as a family and as a church, may we remember all that you have done for us and all that you call us to do for others.  Amen.

  • A Full Summer

We received an overwhelming response to our "A Full Summer" sign-up and both teams are FULL! Thank you to our families for your support and enthusiasm to serve our community.

We are still collecting donations to meet the contribution requirement which buys the snacks for the event. See below for more information about "A Full Summer". We hope you will consider supporting this cause and our HCES teams.

    A Full Summer Information:
One of the most anticipated opportunities is our annual participation in A FULL SUMMER, an organization that feeds local children during the summer months. For the past two years, HCES families have worked alongside other community members to pack nutritious snacks for food insecure children in Leon County. Last year alone, our HCES teams helped pack 7,000 snacks for the 40% of local students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals. With help from Second Harvest, agencies such as Capital City Youth Services, Big Brother Big Sisters, Big Bend Homeless Coalition, and Good News Ministries distributed these much-needed packs. We are proud to, once again, partner with A FULL SUMMER to provide HCES families an opportunity to “spread love through Tallahassee”.

Here’s how you can get involved:
A FULL SUMMER: Saturday, June 1, 2024, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, Godby High School cafeteria (1717 W. Tharpe Street)
    • Donate money towards our $1,000 contribution requirement and help A FULL SUMMER meet their $40,000 goal to purchase the snacks and support local school food pantries.

We hope you will join us in supporting A FULL SUMMER on June 1st.  And we look forward to sharing more opportunities in the fall as we work side-by-side to spread the HCES love through Tallahassee!

Administrators and teachers from member FCIS, SAIS, and Cognia schools will be on our campus to evaluate and observe HCES for our five-year Reaccreditation Visit. Our faculty and staff have been preparing for this important evaluation since last summer and are pleased to host ten team members from all over the southeast. The visitors will be on campus beginning Monday, February 5th through Wednesday, February 7th. Please help us ensure the evaluation is a success by having your child arrive at school on time and in proper dress code clothing. If you are visiting the school, please remember to check in at the office. We look forward to showcasing our incredible school community to our accreditation team and we appreciate your help!

  • NEW Trophy Cases

You may have noticed a new addition to our Student Center Lobby. With the help and generous gifts and talents of several in our community, we now have beautiful trophy cases filled with memorabilia from over the years.

The trophy cases, a gift from Ashley and Chris Chaney (parents to Penelope- 3rd and Charlie- K), were previously located in Andrew's Downtown on the corner of Adams and Jefferson Street. When Ashley began the visions for her new restaurant, the Hayward House - in that very location, she offered the cases to the school. We were thrilled to give them a new home and have the opportunity to have a piece of Tallahassee history. Leo Bonell, dad to Blake (3rd), Maddie (class of 2021) and husband to Mrs. Bonell (4th grade teacher), delicately disassembled, transported, and rebuilt the cases in our Student Center Lobby. The cases fit perfectly and look like they were custom-made for the space.

This week, parents Katherine Boland (Everett- class of 2022, Eva- 7th and Eliza- 5th) and Gina Coffas (Owen- 5th and Quinn- 3rd) gathered trophies and memorabilia from across campus and thoughtfully filled the cases. The addition of the cases bring a sense of pride and nostalgia to our Student Center Lobby.

Thank you Ashley, Chris, Leo, Katherine and Gina for your time, talents and generous gifts. We are so grateful to have the opportunity to give the cases new life while showcasing the accomplishments of our students and athletes. Community initiatives like these truly make such an impact, and it's fantastic to see the collaboration and generosity within our school community. Families, next time you are on campus, stop in to take a look!

  • Meet in the Middle: 5th Grade Jump Up Day - January 18th

We are thrilled to share an upcoming event with you - Meet in the Middle: A 5th Grade Jump-up Day on Thursday, January 18, 2024. Each year, our current 5th grade students "jump up" to Middle School for a day to get a sneak peek of the 6th grade experience. Once again, we are extending that opportunity and welcoming any local 5th graders, who are not currently enrolled at HCES, to join our 5th graders and spend a day on campus as they experience Middle School classrooms, enjoy lunch in The Commons and a pep rally! Last year, we welcomed 6 new students to our middle school who attended this event.

Morning arrival for our visitors is at 8:00 am. Parents will meet for a morning discussion led by Amy Vernon, Head of the Middle School.

Other fun activities will follow in the afternoon, including a peek into our elective classes, a pep rally, 6th grade panel Q & A, and maybe even a basketball game after school!

Registration is necessary so that we can make Middle School class schedules for our guests. Please use the form on this page to register. This event is FREE and open to the public.

More information can be found at www.hces.org/meetinthemiddle. Please jump on Facebook and share the event with your friends. We are so excited to welcome these new faces to a day on campus.

In addition, if you know of someone who is interested but cannot attend or is looking at other grade levels, we welcome them to come for a visit anytime. They can schedule a time to drop by with me, Nena at 850-383-1007 or through email at nmartinez@hces.org
